Romance

Anything by Christine Feehan, especially "Dark Prince"

Lisa Kleypas' "Dreaming of You"

Linda Howard (it's hard to go wrong with her, but these  are my favorites)
"After the Night"
"Shades of Twilight"
"Dream Man"
and "Son of the Morning" (a truly amazing book)

Claudia Dain's "Tell Me Lies"
(This is Claudia's debut novel, and it's fantastic)

Susan Squires - Her books are anything but typical.
They are wonderfully researched and hard-hitting.
"Danegeld"
"Sacrament"

"Warrior Moon" by Marilyn Jordan
This is a futuristic that was really well written. If anyone knows where I can get more of her books, let me know!

"This Time Forever" by Kathleen Eagle
Not really a hot romance, but compelling and well-written.

Anne Lawrence - she alternates between fantasy and historical books.
Both are excellent.

Science Fiction/Fantasy

"A Canticle for Leibowitz" by Walter Miller.
It's called a classic for a reason. Read it.

"The Dispossessed" by Ursula K. LeGuin
Another classic. Explores life in an anarchic utopia.

"The Parafaith War" by L.E. Modesitt, Jr.
Entertaining and thought-provoking.

"An Alien Light" by Nancy Kress.
Kress is known for writing high-end science fiction, but she gets an honorable mention in romance for "The White Pipes"

Deborah Talmadge-Bickmore.
To the best of my knowledge, she only wrote two books but they were both great fantasy romances. If you know anything more, please tell me!
"The Apprentice" and "The Heldan"

Anything by Laurell K. Hamilton.
Start with "Guilty Pleasures", the first of her Anita Blake books.

C.S. Friedman - All this author's books are great, but my favorites are:
"This Alien Shore"
"In Conquest Born"

"Daughter of the Blood" by Anne Bishop
This is the first of the Black Jewels Trilogy.

Sharon Shinn - Another great writer.
Try "Archangel," the first of her "Samaria" trilogy.

"Infinity Hold" by Barry B. Longyear.

"Illusion" by Paula Volsky
A horrific fantasy of the French revolution. A good read.

"A Matter for Men" by David Gerrold.
This is the first of his series "The War Against the Chtorr"

Non-fiction

"The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker
Every woman should read this book.
